Well I made it through Tuesday...bonus points right there folks. My first fire drill in Korea. At first it was a rather subtle noise and then came the full on air raid siren. Definitely gets your attention. The students walk out of classes quite orderly in comparison to others I have had in the past. I honestly wonder at times what they would do if there really was a fire or any emergency for that matter. It seems like such a far away concept to them. I am glad that they can feel that safe but at the same time I want them to understand that these things can really happen. I was kind of hoping to see real fire trucks and stuff but alas it was not to be. Strange what I can get excited over these days. It is the same with the guards at the front gate of the school. We have security guards for some reason. I am not really sure why but when you are a teacher and you walk by on the sidewalk which is maybe 20 or 30 feet they stop, stand straight, and salute you. I don't know whether to bow, say hello, or salute back. Sometimes I think they might wonder if I am having a seizure because I can't make up my mind what to do.
Today I started what would be considered my junior high level concert band and orchestra. They meet twice a week after school. I think we will have a good time together overall. I just wish I had a bunch of music from the states for these groups! There are so many I think they might enjoy. It is my first chance to work with the younger students as well which is a nice change.
As you can see from the picture there was another new eating adventure after classes. I mean when you don't finish school until 5:30 sometimes you just want to eat out. Today my friend took me to the Grande Department Store which has a food court. We had sushi. All of the little plates come around on conveyer belts and you just pick which ones you want. The chefs are right there and are making fresh ones as you sit and watch or eat. This seems simple at first. But A this is like real sushi people. Not Americanized sushi. And B I have absolutely no clue what the majority of it is and there is no menu of any sort. Especially no english menu. Talk about some serious faith going on. All in all I succeeded pretty well. I am not sure it is my cup of tea so to speak all the time. I have thing about food being cooked. But it is neat to try and I am sure I will end up doing it again at some point. It is amazing what your day can be like when you have no sense of routine or normal each morning. Hmmmmm I wonder what will happen tomorrow.
I think you should do cartwheels next time they salute you. Then they'll REALLY wonder what shakin'! I haven't totally bought into the sushi idea either, but I imagine the real deal has to be okay. Are they overall pretty healthy people there?
