(Kindergarten music class. Fun to watch others teach!)
Well somehow I survived day one. I can't say for sure if it was a total success or an epic fail on my part yet. I got a few of the kids to smile and laugh though and that is always a goal of mine. Today was just a chance for me really to see the kids. To get a feel of what it will be like here. There were a lot of similarities and a lot of differences to be sure. I have not had the chance to meet the junior high level students yet but they seem so eager to get a jump on the day. As always the copier didn't want to copy right off but other teachers helped me with that. Class rosters are changed almost every hour and attendance is something I have to make sure to take in the first 10 minutes or I get a reminder phone call. It is weird to just pick up your laptop and do those kinds of things anywhere in the classroom. You are also expected to keep online to find out updates from class to class. Where is it I teach? You want me to make sure I am online? The students here are different in some ways. They all come to school neatly dressed and even though there are little clicks they still listen to you. (Or they did to me when I showed them pics of Emmett high school) They are polite but they have secret and shared thoughts or moments from time to time. 9th grade students were very inquisitive and wanted to know about class and school and where I am from and everyone's names and and and....The 10th grade class were comatose. It was a long 60 minutes but I am hoping to get through to them at some point. Some personalities were universal though. The giggler. The shy one. The I'm pretending not to care but desperately want to fit in. The I am only here because my parents said to be. The I have all the answers but none of the questions. They are all here bless em for it. It will just take me a good deal of time to know them and for them to know and trust me.
My final class of the day was high school band. Up from 53 to 59. They are most definitely a band class. They will test me and they may be surprised at how that goes. I am not sure. I think that some may see me as being a pushover and not serious about music. It will be an interesting road for them. I am interested to see how well they sight read and sound. It will help me to figure out names as well if I get them into sections. If they give me a chance I think we could have a great year.
Time to plan for tomorrow...
